Treatment of Age Related Macular Degeneration

Cure macular degeneration by involving the help of qualified eye specialists and using today's medical technologies. Wet macular degeneration is treated with laser surgery, photodynamic therapy, and injections.
Since leaky vessels cause wet AMD, laser surgery addresses it best.

If photodynamic therapy is performed, a certain drug called the verteporfin is injected to the blood stream so it will travel throughout the body. The drug is expected to reach the eye as well. And once it does, the doctor will shine a special light into the patient's eye. Doing so will activate the drug and treat the disease.

Today, wet AMD can be treated through a direct drug injection into the eyes. These drugs fall under the anti-VEGF therapy. Patients need multiple injections before the disease is treated. The injections need to be at least a month apart.

On the other hand, dry macular degeneration treatment is carried out through the regular intake of prescribed doses of oral drugs such as zinc and anti-oxidants. While these substances may not fully heal the disease, it can certainly delay its advancement on the patient.

Prevention of Age Related Macular Degeneration

To prevent the onset of macular degeneration symptoms, these are the things a person who is at high risk of developing the disease should do:
  1. Maintain a healthy diet.
A healthy diet is a very important shield against this disease. People aged 40 and above should choose a diet rich in green leafy vegetables and fish. These foods are known to ensure the health of the macula.
  2. Refrain from smoking.
Smoking is indeed hazardous to the health. And it does not only induce macular degeneration but a lot of other diseases as well. To fully live a healthy lifestyle, smoking has to be prevented at all costs.
  3. Always watch your blood pressure.
Older people are prone to developing hypertension. And since macular degeneration affects the blood vessels of the eye, it is important that the blood pressure is always maintained at normal.
  4. Don't put too much weight.
Being overweight could cause a lot of other diseases as well. And it is certainly not advisable to people who are beyond 40. Watch your weight and ensure that you are always slim and fit.
  5. Exercise on a regular basis.
Part of a healthy regimen is staying active. Exercising ensures blood circulation. When the blood is healthy, everything else follows. And that includes the macula, which is the main target of the disease.
Macular degeneration has the potential be very serious. For one thing it could cost a person's ability to see. Age related macular degeneration happens very frequently in people aged 40 and beyond. It is very important to do the things that would prevent its onset at a young age, instead of treating it when it develops.
