Symptoms of Amblyopia

One of the main symptoms of amblyopia is the incapacity to focus correctly. People who suffer from this disorder will notice that they can't obtain acute or clear vision.
This is because, in order to have a sharper image of your surroundings, several elements of your eye are compromised. If only one of them doesn't work correctly, then the rest will work wrong. It's like the production line in a factory. You only need one machine to work inadequately and the rest of the operation is compromised.

The second symptom of amblyopia is a low sensitivity to contrast. Contrast is the ability that our eyes have to determine the differences between different objects. Our eyes can do that through the perception of color and brightness. If we suffer from amblyopia, we won't be able to adequately distinguish certain details.

Treatments For Amblyopia

Fortunately, there are two cures for lazy eye. Of course, both of them require that the treatment is applied as soon as possible (that means, the younger, the better). The first kind of treatment involves the use of a patch. The patch is placed over the good eye for a period that can go from a few weeks up to a year. This period will be determined by the ophthalmologist, who is the only one that can determine the type of treatment and the period that will be applied.

The second type of treatment is the use of medication. Drops are applied to the good eye, so the image gets blurry. That way, the bad eye is forced to work correctly. Although this solution is aesthetically better (imagine how traumatic can be for a young child to use a patch for as long as a year), it isn't as successful as a patch.

But, what happens if the eye isn't treated? In that case, the eye may reach a point in which the condition is irreversible. After some time, the eye may become functionally blind, a scenario that no one wants to experiment.

And, what about other ideas for amblyopia, like lazy eye surgery? Unfortunately, there isn't a surgical procedure that can correct this error. Although there are surgical procedures that can fix strabismus, the same doesn't happen for amblyopia. That is why it is very important to diagnose this problem as soon as possible.

Although amblyopia treatments are not very varied, at least they offer a solution to a problem that can become very serious. Of course, their adequate treatment will depend on how responsible are the parents with their children. On the other hand, if it is a patient sufferi ng from toxic amblyopia, the welfare institution or the doctors are the ones that need to detect it.
