Common eye infections and their symptoms

Eye infections are caused due to certain viruses, bacteria or fungi and are of varying intensity depending upon the type of infection. Any part of the eye may be affected due to infection and the infection may be present in a single or both the eyes. Eye infection symptoms are commonly associated with red eyes, swelling, itching sensation and may even include vision problems along with pain in the eyes.

Conjunctivitis is a common eye infection and it may be caused as a result of a viral eye infection or as a result of a bacterial eye infection. The infection leads to the inflammation of the conjunctiva which is the inner cornea of the eye and the inner eyelid. This common eye infection is associated with red eyes that are swollen with watery discharge. A crust like formation on the eye is noticed when the eyes are shut for a prolonged period with difficulty in opening one’s eyes as result of increased amounts of discharge from the eye. When a virus causes conjunctivitis the discharge is watery and thin. Bacterial eye infection that leads to conjunctivitis is associated with thick discharge which may be yellow, white or even green in colour. Adenovirus is the cause of viral conjunctivitis in humans and it is highly contagious with the infection spreading fast on contact. Towels, glasses and any other item used by the infected person should not be used by an uninfected person as it could transfer infection. Conjunctivitis is also associated with increases sensitivity to light and it would be soothing to wear sunglasses for protection.

Bacterial keratitis is another important bacterial eye infection. This infection is one of the dangerous eye infections that are caused due to the use of contact lenses. If the lenses are used without proper disinfection treatment, they could carry germs that cause several infections with some that threaten visibility. A reduction in immunity is another cause of this infection and this reduced immunity might be caused due to conditions like diabetes, malnutrition or habits like alcoholism. Certain other situations that could increase the chances of acquiring bacterial keratitis are the use of eye solutions or medications that could be contaminated or the use of topical steroids. The symptoms that are associated with this bacterial eye infection are sudden pain in the eye with reduced vision. The person would become increasingly sensitive to light and there will be excessive watery discharge from one’s eyes. Bacterial keratitis is an infection of the eye that is treated with antibacterial drops and sometimes the use of topical steroids is required.

Anterior Blepharitis is an inflammation of the Blepharitis and one of the leading causes of this type of eye infection is Staphylococcus. There will be eye swelling, redness in the eye, itching, photophobia and a crusty deposit on the eyes after awakening. Blepharitis may be treated by wiping one’s eyes with a moist cotton wool and applying antibiotic or steroid eye drops.

One of the most severe eye infections caused by a virus is the Herpes zoster opthalmicus, which is caused by the Herpes varicella zoster that causes chicken pox and shingles. When this virus causes infection around the eyes and the eye it is called Herpes zoster opthalmicus. The Herpes virus eye infection symptoms include precedence by a pain in the part of the face where blisters will be caused as a result of this virus. The blisters are commonly seen on the forehead and around the eye, which are generally seen on only one side of the face. The Herpes virus eye infection symptoms also include redness of the eye, swelling and watery discharge. Early treatment of this viral eye infection will reduce the pain and the number of blisters that will be caused during the course of this infection. This viral infection spreads rapidly and contact with susceptible people should be avoided. The pain can be relieved to a large extent by the use of cold compress and taking medications that reduce pain.

People who use contact lens are at increased risk of acquiring an eye infection, as the contact lenses when removed could come in contact with germs. When the contact lenses are improperly cleaned before adding them back to the eye, they could lead to dangerous eye infections due to use of such contacts. Contact lens wearers are highly susceptible to keratitis, which may be caused due to a virus, fungi or bacteria. Fungal keratitis is normally associated with warm climates. The symptoms of this eye infection is pain in the eye with redness, increased sensitivity to light, a watery discharge from the eye and vision that is blurred. Keratitis is an eye infection that should be treated immediately and without delay as it could lead to partial vision impairment or total blindness. Fungal keratitis is usually treated with topical antifungal creams or sometimes oral pills. Surgery is suggested for those who do not respond to such treatment.

People who use contact lenses should exercise caution while using the contact lenses to ensure that they are not affected by any eye infection. Contact lenses should be necessarily removed when the person swims or is involved in any sport or activity that would bring the contact lenses in connection with water. The lenses should be changed periodically in accordance with the manufacture’s specifications with fresh cleaning liquid added after every use. Contact lenses should be handled only after washing one’s hands properly. Such care taken while using contact lenses will drastically reduce incidences of eye infection due to the use of contact lenses.
