Alcon Recalls Eye Drops The company Alcon Laboratories Inc. which makes eye care products recently announced that they are issuing a voluntary recall of their Systane Free Liquid Gel lubricant eye drops. The lubricant was found to have mold in several bottles that were returned. However, the company states that it is unlikely anyone could develop an infection from the mold. The company says they have received no reports of fungal infection from the eye drops although eleven people have report finding foreign material in bottles of the lubricant. After testing the eye drops the company reported that the problem was caused by the formulation of the product and not from the manufacturing process. Alcon says there are only recalling the eye drops that have 'Free' on the label and all other products manufactured by the company are not being recalled at this time. In the United States and Puerto Rico the Systane Free Liquid Gel eye drops make up less than ten percent of the companies sales when it come to artificial tears products and less than two-tenths of one percent when it comes to their global sales. Although the recall isn't expected to cause any material impact on the company's sales or profits during the 2007 year; the recall is estimated to cost the company between eight million and ten million. |
