Diabetes Awareness Month

November is the Diabetes Awareness Month. Over the past ten years more and more people have been diagnosed with diabetes type 1 or two. There are many things that can be done for people with diabetes depending on the type of diabetes they are suffering from. However there is a lot that you can do to avoid getting (type 2) diabetes, the kind of diabetes that is often treated with a diet.

People with diabetes are at least 60% more likely to develop eye problems. Cataracts and glaucoma are very common health problems in people with diabetes and if the condition is not recognized in its early stages it can be hard to treat diabetes-related eye problems successfully.

Patients diagnosed with something called diabetic retinopathy suffer from leaking blood vessels in the eye and fluids may enter areas of the eye that can get damaged because of this. Abnormalities such as blood vessels may grow on the surface of the retina and cause eyesight problems. This way the nerves inside the eye as well as the blood vessels and the eye muscles could be affected by diabetes. Most of these problems are caused by fluctuating blood sugar levels. High blood sugar will cause the lens of the eye to swell and this causes sight problems like blurry vision.

If caught in time these problems can possibly be corrected with techniques such as laser treatment and medication or a combination of a diet and medication. People suspecting that they may be suffering from fluctuating blood sugar levels and sight problems should contact their doctor. The earlier the condition is diagnosed, the more chance patients have of avoiding eyesight problems.
