Beer goggles cause blurred sight

Alcohol consumption clouds our thought processes and the way the brain responds to our surroundings. From being unable to walk in a straight line to not being able to fully understand and realize what is going on around us at all, after a number of drinks every person has reached his or her sanity limit.

Drinking regularly does not only affect our perception of the world around us but can also change out world in a different and more permanent way. Drinkers often end up with several physical problems. Heart attacks, high blood pressure problems, a loss of the ability of the brain to remember, and eye problems are very common in heavy (or even regular) drinkers.

The well-known eye care company Bausch and Lomb PureVision has conducted research into the effects of alcohol on the brain and more importantly on the way we see people. People 's vision and description of a person that was standing on the other side of a slightly darkened and smoky room depended heavily on their alcohol intake. This effect has been described as the 'beer goggle' effect.

This eyesight problem has got very little to do with a permanent physical or medical condition but is connected to the 'bloodshot' eyes that people drinking in a crowded and smoky room display. The blood vessels in the eye respond to the alcohol intake of a person and the sight gets blurred. Combined with the fact that the brain is not working fully (or properly) when someone is drunk, people tend to interpret whatever they are seeing differently.
