Laser eye surgery is effective and safe.

Researchers examined patients after a decade of their treatment and found that both LASIK and PRK procedures for correcting myopia provide stable, long term improvement for nearsightedness.

This is the result of a then year study presented at the conference where the Academy of Ophthalmology's 2006 had a Joint Meeting. This study provides a clear answer to those who doubt LASIK's reliability.

Lead investigator Jorge L. Alio, MD, PhD, chair of ophthalmology at the Universidad Miguel Hernandez in Alicante, Spain who is the medical director of VISSUM added that the study included 100 eyes with myopia or myopic astigmatism and was corrected by LASIK. Even with the 100 eyes correct with PRK surgery the findings provided results that showed patients still had the ability to focus and did not have much visual distortion even after ten years,

According to standard industry safety evaluations both the procedures have scored well on long term statistics and patients on an average had a 20/25 vision even ten years after surgery. The average patient enjoyed near normal vision even a decade later.

The results of the study showed that the average PRK patient maintained near normal vision from a severely myopic pre PRK measurement. This was true in the case of LASIK patients as well.

LASIK is reshaping the cornea without working on directly on the cornea. PRK uses a laser to reshape the cornea as well. The only difference is that PRK works directly on the outer surface.

Eye correction surgery is to reshape the cornea so that the changes such that it focuses perfectly on the retina. According to the data PRK was more effective in case of low levels of myopia where as LASIK was more effective in severe cases of myopia. These differences were due to the state of technology ten years ago. Present technologies have brought both LASIK and PRK to be equally effective.
