Outreach Program receives National Public Health Award

Indiana University and the IU school of Optometry had joined in an initiative to provide vision health care for un-insured and low income individual of Central Indiana. This selfless effort of theirs has gained them national accolades and recognition for their altruistic spirit. ECCO ( Eye Care Community Outreach Program) has met the needs of many of the poor un-insured individuals in counties of Marion, Hendricks, Boone, Hamilton, Hancock, Morgan, Johnson and Shelby. Since April 2004 ECCO has provided patients information and education on eye care and other social and medical services. It has also coordinated with local organizations to offer referrals for free vision care. ECCO has thus connected people to health services beyond optometry and ophthalmology through referrals.

The Outstanding Project Award to ECCO by the American Public Health Association is a recognition for their significant contribution to the advancement of vision care in the public health field. The American Public Health Association is the oldest and largest public health organization in the world.

ECCO Project co-directors 's Dewana Allen and Kelli Baker who over see the program have highlighted the importance of eye care as secondary to primary health care. Self sufficiency and independence is dependent on good ocular health. For this regular eye examination to detect any eye problems is necessary. This also provides insight into other diseases associated with the body.

ECCO's services are crucial to those whose health conditions can lead to loss of vision. Diabetes, Heart Disease and sickle cell anemia are likely to affect vision as well. One of main goals of the projects is education to diverse communities like nursing homes, schools, shelters and those communities that are at high risk for developing eye complications like Hispanics, African-Americans and children.

Anthem/Well point Foundation, the Marion County Health Department, the Indianapolis Foundation, Hoover Family Foundation and the Alcon Foundation support ECCO.
