Amblyopia Amblyopia is an eye condition more commonly known as lazy eye. It is reduced vision in an eye caused by inadequate use during childhood. It is often caused by a misalignment in the eyes such as crossed eyes or a difference in the image quality between the two eyes, when one eye focuses better than the other. In these cases, on eye becomes stronger while the other grows weaker. The child generally uses the stronger eye and if untreated, the weaker eye can become useless. This condition can be treated if diagnosed early enough and the sight in the lazy eye can be fixed. However, if the eye is not treated early enough, then it may never develop full vision and even become blind. Glasses may be prescribed to improve the focus of the eyes. Surgery can be performed in order to straighten the eyes if glasses are unsuccessful. Eye exercises are used before and after surgery to try and teach the patient to use both eyes to work together. It is often required to cover the stronger eye with a patch, which forces the weaker to work and therefore strengthening its vision. Eyes drop can be used to blur the vision of the good eye in order to force the weaker one to work but patches are usually more effective. More Glossary Terms Explained here |
