Amsler Grid An Amsler Grid is a useful tool when monitoring the central visual field. This simple screening test is used to assess the macula which is the centre of the retina. It is a way to detect early visual changes that may be related to macular diseases such as age-related degeneration and diabetic macular edema. It is used to monitor changes in vision once they have been detected. People can get these grids from their optician and easily monitor their own vision using the grids. The grid is made of a box of diagonal and horizontal lines with a dot in the middle. The patient is required to cover one eye at a time and stare at the dot in the middle of the grid. Missing lines, waving lines, etc are all indications that the sight is less than perfect. When this type of test has been taken, it is important to assess the results. If the lines of the grid do not appear straight or if there are missing areas then the doctor should examine the back of the eye very closely. If the test is taken at home and the results are irregular, then the doctor should be notified as soon as possible. More Glossary Terms Explained here |
