Aphakia Aphakia is the absence of the eye lens due to surgical removal, perforating wound, congenital problem or ulcer. This condition means the patient is legally blind. Many children are born with this disorder and others acquire the problem in later life. Complications can include the detachment of the retina or even glaucoma. Treatment can include strong convex lens prescriptions by way of glasses or contact lenses. Treatment does not guarantee success however. The absence of the eye lens can occur from a pre-birth abnormality or as a result of cataract operations. Black lights are often used in its treatment. Excessive light and glare should be avoided such as sitting away from windows. Ultra-violet light is thought to be absorbed by the lens and protect the retina of the eye from exposure. When there is no lens to protect the retina, then it will be exposed and possibly damaged. There has been some controversy over the use of black lights to treat aphakic children. The use should be limited and care should be taken to protect the eye from the light sources. Patients should avoid looking directly at light sources. More Glossary Terms Explained here |
