Astigmatism Astigmatism is usually when the cornea or even lens are shaped irregularly. Either type of stigmatism can be corrected with the use of glasses, contact lenses or surgery. A small amount of astigmatism may give slightly blurred vision however if it remains untreated, then it can give headaches, eyestrain and blurred vision. It can cause near and far sightedness. It is generally hereditary, where people are born with an oblong cornea and the vision problems can get worse over time. It can also occur due to an eye injury, which has caused scarring on the cornea. It can be caused from certain forms of eye surgery or from diseases, which cause the thinning of the cornea. In the past only rigid contact lenses could correct astigmatism but now there are soft contacts that can also correct astigmatism called toric contact lenses. These lenses can also contain prescriptions for nearsightedness or farsightedness if required. Severe astigmatism can require rigid contact lenses or glasses. Depending on the type of stigmatism, it may be necessary to have it corrected with refractive surgery. The type of corrective procedure will be decided by the eye doctor based on the severity and type of astigmatism. More Glossary Terms Explained here |
