Blepharitis

Blepharitis is a condition that causes inflammation of the eyelids. It is very common and is related to a low level bacterial infection or a general skin condition. There are two forms namely anterior blepharitis and posterior blepharitis. Anterior blepharitis affects the outside of the eyelid where the eyelashes are attached. Bacteria and dandruff can cause it. Posterior blepharitis affects the inner eyelid and can be caused by oil gland problems. Symptoms can include eye irritation, burning, dryness and a crusty material in the lashes, corner of the eye and on the lid. Treatment is needed as long-term affects include eyelash loss, thickened lid margins and even erosion of the cornea.

Blepharitis often reoccurs and treatment comes in a varying amount of ways. Cleaning the lids, applying warm compresses, using antibiotic or antiseptic substances and massaging the eyelids. Sometime steroids are used. The idea of most treatments is to clear the eye of the crusts and then draw out the infection. There are various types of treatments used to clear the eye, from used teabags to specially formulated products. The eye may need to be cleaned a number of times a day in order to remove the infection.
