Color Blindness Color blindness refers to the lack of ability to differentiate certain colors from other colors. For instance, the inability to distinguish between red and green. This trait is more common among men than women. It is an inherited condition. But it can also be caused by diseases such as muscular degeneration, poisoning or side effects of some medicines. Though this condition is exclusive to men, usually women are the carriers of this defect. This is because the defect is passed on through a defective x chromosome. It is said that about one in twenty men are affected by this condition. On the other hand only one in two hundred women are affected. Color blindness is caused by reduced number of cone cells in the retina of the eye. As we all know, retina is responsible for color vision. Cone cells are of three types. They are in red, blue and green cells that are sensitive to light. The kind of color blindness depends upon the type of cell being affected. More Glossary Terms Explained here |
