Photo Chromic Lenses

Photo chromic lenses refer to spectacle lenses that undergo a chemical reaction due to the exposure to the Ultraviolet wavelength in sunlight. They are chemically coated to react to the changes in the lighting. Consequently, the lenses turn dark in bright sunshine and appear clear while staying indoors.

The reason behind its clear appearance under artificial light is it does not contain UV rays. The possible ways of UV exposure are blocked while staying indoors. Photo chromic lenses are made of either glass or plastic. The glass lenses have become the thing of the past. They are the first developed lens version in 1960's. They rely on the embedding of microcrystalline silver halides to achieve their photo chromic properties.

On the other hand, plastic photo chromic lenses depend upon organic photo chromic molecules for achieving the reversible darkening effect. The thermal effect that brings back the photo chromic compounds to its clear state is called temperature dependency.
